More Than Just a Name

This legendary creature now proudly carries the name chosen by YOU, the USV community, and it couldn’t be more fitting. University of Silicon Valley wasn’t always known by this name. Our roots trace back to 1887, when Dr. Henry Cogswell founded Cogswell Polytechnical College in San Francisco. Driven by the spirit of innovation and technical education, Cogswell Polytechnical College was a place where bright minds met big ideas. It was thought to be the first technical training institution of its kind in the Western United States.

Cogswell is more than just our mascot and a fiery dragon—Cogswell is a symbol of our past, present, and future. From tech pioneers to tomorrow’s creators, Cogswell is here to inspire us all to soar to new heights.

Welcome to the age of Cogswell!
