About Dr. Shuyi Sun

Computer Science

I am a Ph.D. researcher in Computer Science whose work focuses on Human Computer Interaction, embedded systems, and sensing technologies. I earned my Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Davis, and previously completed my B.S. in Computer Science at the Georgia Institute of Technology. My doctoral dissertation introduced Animal Biosensing Computing, a research area that investigates how non-invasive biosensing systems can be designed to support veterinary health and animal care through interactive, embedded technologies.

Across my research, I work at the intersection of coding, system design, and real world deployment. I design and build sensing systems that integrate embedded hardware, custom electronics, and software pipelines with human centered interaction design. My work emphasizes making complex biological signals interpretable and actionable in everyday contexts.

In terms of industry and applied research experience, I have worked as a Graduate Researcher at the Interactive Organisms Lab at UC Davis, where I developed embedded biosensing platforms using electrochemical and colorimetric sensors, custom PCBs, and sensor-to-cloud architectures. I have also held research roles at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and Georgia Institute of Technology, contributing to projects involving wearable devices, interactive systems, and animal centered sensing technologies.
