Our Story

Founded in 1887 as Cogswell Polytechnical College by Dr. Henry Daniel Cogswell — one of San Francisco’s earliest entrepreneurs — the school pioneered technical education on the West Coast. Over the decades, programs expanded from engineering to digital audio, game design, and animation.

In 2021, the school became the University of Silicon Valley, reflecting its evolution and alignment with the industries shaping the future. Today, USV continues its mission: preparing students for real-world success through project-based learning and a portfolio-first approach.

Who We Are

The University of Silicon Valley (USV) is where imagination meets industry. From day one, students work in team-based, project-driven environments that mirror real studios and production pipelines. You’ll create animated shorts, design games, produce audio tracks, and write software — all while collaborating across disciplines and preparing a portfolio employers want to see.

The Silicon Valley Advantage

Located in the heart of San Jose, USV puts you steps away from the world’s leading tech and creative companies. Over 6,600 firms — including Google, Apple, Meta, and Adobe — call Silicon Valley home. With job growth in creative tech outpacing the national average, you’ll be in the ideal place to launch your career.
